Terminal 5, Heathrow
Working on one of the largest construction sites in Europe, both Wilson James and Elliott Thomas are providing full logistics packages to BAA (for the main terminal building, two satellite buildings, 60 aircraft stands, air traffic control tower, 4,000 space multi-storey car park, 600 bedroom hotel and new spur road from the M25) and principal contractor Balfour Beatty (for work on the Track Transit System - TTS), respectively.Despite being equivalent in size to London's Hyde Park, the T5 site itself is very heavily constrained and presents many logistical challenges. To the north and south of the site are two of the world's most heavily utilised runways. With 36 work areas on site, there is little or no room to store materials for any length of time. Project teams were required to plan their material requirements for up to six week in advance. By implementing a robust logistics strategy at Terminal 5, significant savings have been realised. The increased reliability and efficiency in the use of materials led to an increase on productivity levels from a traditional build of 55-60% to 80-85% with associated cost savings in the region of 2.5%. Specific logistics services provided include: Colnbrook Logistics Centre - Managing the delivery of all construction materials, consolidating loads and delivering materials to the workface on a just-in-time basis. Material Handling & Distribution - distribution of materials from offload areas to work areas via hoists and forklifts. Waste Management - provision of operatives to coordinate and manage the safe cleaning and removal of trade debris, off-cuts and hazardous materials to dedicated areas. Fire Safety - provision of Fire Marshals to coordinate fire points, signage and emergency procedures/drills. Welfare Management - management and coordination of operating a safe and clean environment in the welfare areas.
